Life is a Garden: A Message That Inspired Me
Last week, I signed up for a fall beauty ritual. If you’re local to the Cornelius, NC area then the best place for a hair-do or beautifying experience is The Temple. Run by Brittany Withrow, her offerings include a variety of healing modalities such as reiki, organic hair cuts and coloring, natural skin care, and self-care rituals. In 2021 I wanted a blonde balayage look, so I searched online for a location that fit all my needs: organic, vegan, cruelty-free. Brittany’s business popped up, so I gave her a follow, and before I knew it I was signed up for a day retreat! The first time we met in person, I experienced a slow yoga flow, homemade vegan lunch, sound healing, and meditation. It was a blissful, natural, connecting experience. Brittany has been my friend and hair dresser since then.
For a while this year, I felt completely uninspired. I questioned my meaning and purpose, felt disconnected with my reality, and I doubted all my visions. There was a journal prompt from a work book I have that I avoided for a long time: What inspires you? A request to reflect on the last time you felt inspired and notice where you were, who you were with, etc. It wasn’t until today that I finally wrote my answer.
Recent times of inspiration have been in nature, with kind strangers or friends, and answering the call to adventure, explore, and experience. What kick-started my new groove of inspiration, though, was sitting in Brittany’s chair, dedicating time to nourish my hair and skin, and absorbing all of our shared wisdom that filled the room. I found myself explaining aloud how overwhelming and meaningless it seems to only strive for one vision my heart has rather than letting my dreams and goals run wild. That at the end of the day, I would be content working in a coffee shop, so why bother with anything else I aspire to be? Then, Brittany smiled and made a wonderful point about how at the end of the day that’s all that should matter; we don’t need grand achievements to share our light and offerings with the world. So instead of succumbing to the idea of quitting it all and settling for the bare minimum, allow yourself to grow from that level of contentment and see what all can flourish around you. In Brittany’s wise words, we are flowers and the flower just is. Our lives are gardens. We must weed out the dead that no longer serves us, connect to our roots, plant new seeds and see where they go, honor the plants neighboring other plants so that they both can thrive optimally. Everything in a garden is connected. So every pull of a heart string has meaning, and while Brittany spoke from her heart and blow dried my hair, I was reminded of how beautiful this lifetime is. Inspiration hit me once again.
There is soulful intention and a heart full of love when you visit The Temple. It’s not just about the hair. I leave grateful and inspired each time! I wanted to share this experience to emphasize the lesson of tending to our precious Life as if it is a garden, because it is, and with nurturance and care, it excites me to see what all could grow, flourish, be let go of, be fruitful, and bloom.
